Grandma’s fresh strawberry jam . by Hotel Neustift
In Tyrol, it is a tradition to go to Strawberry Land together with the children in the period from the end of May to the beginning of June. There we walk along the small straw-covered paths with our baskets, breathe in the sweet smell of strawberries and hand-pick the local, sun-ripened strawberries that shine out among the lush greenery.
Sincerely
Helga & Stefan from the Augarten . Mountain Pleasure Hotel Neustift
How healthy are strawberries really?
Strawberries are a real superfood! They contain a wealth of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that make it a real wonder weapon for our body.
- Vitamin C strengthens the immune system, protects cells from damage and promotes health and our appearance.
- The fruit also contains iron, manganese, iodine, potassium, fluorine and B vitamins, which support a number of essential bodily functions.
- Potassium, for example, regulates blood pressure, iron produces new red blood cells, fluorine helps our bones and teeth and folates support cell reproduction and blood formation.
Let’s go to strawberry country …
Especially our Felix from the AUGARTEN . Berg Genuss Hotel Neustift can hardly wait every year when it’s time to say “Come on, let’s go to strawberry country!”.
Once home, the aromatic red fruits are immediately processed. A delicious homemade strawberry jam must not be missing here, of course. So every year grandma’s recipe for the ever-popular strawberry jam is consulted and prepared by Helga herself.
We are delighted that Helga would like to share this tried and true family recipe with you today!
So, dear strawberry lovers, pay attention:
The strawberry jam recipe from Helga’s grandma
1. ingredients:
- 1 kg freshly picked strawberries
- 1 lemon
- 500 g jelling sugar 2:1
2nd Preparation:
Before starting work, it is important to wash the jam jars clean and sterilize them. This is very important, otherwise the jam can not be preserved, but soon begin to mold.
There are many different ways to do this. Helga prefers to work with hot steam. This way, the jars, the lids and also the funnel (preferably with a large opening) are sterilized. Of course, a continuing clean work is very important!
For the jam, first wash your strawberries thoroughly under running water. Subsequently, the leaf green is removed. Now put half of the strawberries in a mixing bowl and puree them. Chop the second half and put the strawberry pieces in a saucepan with the puree. Then halve the lemon, squeeze it and add the juice to the strawberries with the preserving sugar. Then mix the ingredients well and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
A foam will form on the surface of the jam, which you skim off with a spoon. After this has cooled, it is perfect to taste … is really delicious!!!
Now place the funnel on the jam jars, fill them with the fragrant jam, close the jars tightly and immediately turn the jars upside down. In this way you prevent the spoilage of the jam.
3. let cool down
Let the jars cool and enjoy the jam in the morning on a fresh crunchy roll. Simply delicious! This is a great way to start your day!
“We at AUGARTEN . Berg Genuss Hotel Neustift wish you a lot of fun while cooking!
P.S.: Post a photo of your jam on our Facebook page! That would make us very happy!”
